Should Amazon change how Kindle pages are numbered?

People are passionate about page numbers.
Just ask the hundreds of posters in Amazon’s Kindle forums who’ve debated the issue of how Amazon numbers its pages with “locations” on the Kindle and in its Kindle e-book-reading apps. And just ask the readers who’ve e-mailed me over the years complaining about Amazon’s numbering scheme.
“I got a Kindle for Christmas and I like it a lot but I still don’t understand what those numbers are at the bottom of the screen,” one reader e-mailed me recently. “Someone explained it to me and I still don’t understand it. They have page numbers on the Nook, why can’t they just do it for the Kindle?”

Due to incredible demand, Amazon is forced to limit Kindle sales to 5 units per household. The Kindle has been Amazon.com’s best selling item for two years in a row.

The Kindle e-reader had topped all of Amazon’s lists: most-wished-for, most-gifted and has garnered the more 5-star reviews than any product on the retail giant’s website. Since the introduction of the new generation Kindle, with updated features, sleeker design and lower price point at under $200, sales have tripled. Therefore it was necessary for Amazon.com to limit customers a total of five Kindles per household to maintain supplies for a broader customer base.

Analyst: Amazon to sell 5 million Kindles, fend off iPad

Barclays Capital analyst Douglas Anmuth today estimated that Amazon would sell about five million Kindle readers this year. The company should thrive on the combination of the redesign and the lower $139 price. The numbers would more than double over the course of the next two years to reach 11.5 million in 2012.

Anmuth expected the price gap to keep Amazon safe from the effect of the iPad.

Best Buy will soon sell Kindles

Best Buy announced last week it would begin selling Amazon Kindles at Best Buy stores this Fall. This is a big step for Amazon.com, which up until now had sold the Kindle exclusively on the Amazon website. With the new, lower-priced Kindles selling like hot cakes, this could help stimulate holiday sales even more. But the Kindle will be sharing shelf space with other eBook Reader devices including the Sony Reader and the Barnes & Noble Nook, and of course, it will also be competing with the iPad.

Just weeks after lowering the price of the Kindle e-book reader from $259 to $189, Amazon unveiled a fully revamped Kindle on Wednesday. It’s sleeker, better looking, easier on the eyes — and starts at $139.

This new Kindle, Amazon’s third generation, is smaller by 21 percent, and 15 percent lighter too. It has much improved contrast, 50 percent better than before, answering a significant complaint among dead-tree purists who compared the device’s e-ink screen unfavorably to real paper. It’s available in two colors: graphite and white.

New Generation Kindle DX Announced by Amazon.com

Today Amazon.com announced their new Kindle DX e-book reader. On the front page of their website, Amazon has begun to take pre-orders for their update to the current Kindle DX. The Kindle DX was a larger version of the Kindle II reader which has been very successful.

The new Kindle DX will have a 9.7 inch screen, a miniature keyboard, and wireless access. Not only will it run Kindle e-books from Amazon.com but also third party files including pdf documents. Some of the new features include greater screen contrast, better pdf zooming functions, better font displays, and even social network features.

Target expands Kindle ereader sales nationwide

Target announced it will begin selling online retail giant Amazon.com’s Kindle ereader across all of its 1,740 U.S. retail locations. In late April, Target introduced the Kindle–previously available exclusively via the Amazon digital storefront–to shoppers at its flagship Minneapolis location as well as 102 stores in the south Florida market; the device goes on sale nationwide on June 6, and will retail for $259.

Amazon.com Inc., the world’s largest online retailer, plans to introduce the next version of its Kindle electronic-book reader in August, according to two people familiar with its plans.

The device will be thinner and have a more responsive screen with a sharper picture, the people said, who didn’t want to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The new Kindle won’t include a touch screen or color, they said.

Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle e-reader is getting access to Facebook and Twitter, along with several other enhancements, as part of a software update being sent wirelessly to the devices. Amazon said it has released the software to some Kindle owners and expects to send it to all users in late May.
