Kindle

• Cost: starts at $139

• Pros: The best e-reader if your top priority is reading purchased books and newspapers. The Pearl E Ink quality is exquisite, and the battery lasts a full month. It’s also well-priced, light, thin and easy to hold for a long time. The keyboard is delightful for those of us who cling to the old ways. The pages turn rapidly.

• Cons: One of the few e-readers for which library books are off-limits. You can’t add any more memory. Lending is limited and must be managed online. No color, no games.

Nook

• Cost: starts at $149

• Pros: I looked at Nook Color and the original Nook. The Color has top-notch Web browsing (but is Wi-Fi-only) and a great touch screen, but it eats batteries for lunch. You can lend books to other “Nookies” for two weeks, and, when you’re in a Barnes & Noble, you can read any book in its library free for an hour and access free Wi-Fi. Both have a good feel with the rubberized, nonslip back.

• Cons: At $250, why color but not video? And if you read a book on any Nook but then want to read it on your computer or your cell phone, they don’t sync – so you have lost your place.

Sony Reader Daily Edition

• Cost: $299

• Pros: Longer screen than most in a same-sized unit (and it’s one of the lightest), which makes it fun for newspapers and magazines. The graphics load fast. You can take notes and draw on it with a stylus, and it has one of the most extensive annotation setups. Comes with a cover.

• Cons: Noticeable screen glare. Sometimes the touch screen is just plain touchy, and the bookstore can be clunky and confusing to browse. It’s also a little pricey, although the cost has dropped since the unit hit the market.

It’s gotten to the point where everybody and their grandmother, quite literally in most cases, has their own page on the Facebook, Twitter feed, or something similar these days. You might even post to them from your Kindle from time to time. Whole network news stories have formed based off of memes and rumors spreading across the social network giants. We’re all aware of the pervasiveness of the phenomenon and clearly Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN) and Barnes & Noble(NYSE:BKS) are too, given the integration into their eReaders. So, if you want pure, unfiltered information relating to pretty much anything then it only makes sense to consider pulling the comments from these sources. Easier said than done though, given the millions of posts being done on every topic imaginable, or none at all, on a daily basis.

In spite of this, we have Crimson Hexagon, a company that specializes in just this sort of data gathering and analysis! Looking at relevant Twitter Tweets, and no they don’t specific how “relevant” is defined for the sake of this study, they have released a study of the comparative levels of customer satisfaction among owners of the Kindle, Nook, Nook Color, and iPad (though specifying that only tweets specifically related to the iPad’s eReader usefulness are taken into account).

The Barnes and Noble Nook Color just came out to mixed reactions. It looks like a battle of book store against book store, but not e-reader against e-reader. Read on to discover the features of the new Nook Color.

The Nook Color has something that the Amazon Kindle does not have; color! The Kindle is a true e-reader with an “e-ink” screen that performs well in direct sunlight, where an LCD color screen like the Nook Color will not. The Nook Color has the advantage in those books that are for children. It would be hard to imagine a chidren’s book that is not in color. The screen difference is the basic separation for these two devices. The Nook actually has a very high screen resolution for tablet-style devices.

Best Buy announced last week it would begin selling Amazon Kindles at Best Buy stores this Fall. This is a big step for Amazon.com, which up until now had sold the Kindle exclusively on the Amazon website. With the new, lower-priced Kindles selling like hot cakes, this could help stimulate holiday sales even more. But the Kindle will be sharing shelf space with other eBook Reader devices including the Sony Reader and the Barnes & Noble Nook, and of course, it will also be competing with the iPad.

Just weeks after lowering the price of the Kindle e-book reader from $259 to $189, Amazon unveiled a fully revamped Kindle on Wednesday. It’s sleeker, better looking, easier on the eyes — and starts at $139.

This new Kindle, Amazon’s third generation, is smaller by 21 percent, and 15 percent lighter too. It has much improved contrast, 50 percent better than before, answering a significant complaint among dead-tree purists who compared the device’s e-ink screen unfavorably to real paper. It’s available in two colors: graphite and white.

If you’re in the market for an e-book reader, the past couple of weeks have considerably changed your options, and for the better. Barnes & Noble’s and Amazon’s new products and price drops have made their e-book reader hardware considerably more affordable, and you now have excellent options available in the $149 to $199 price range. Also, a flood of new reading-centric apps continues to solidify the Apple iPad’s position as the premium media tablet of choice.

Cnet posted 5 questions to ask yourself to help you decide which one to buy:

How much are you willing to spend?

How large of a screen (and weight) do you want?

What’s your screen preference: e-ink or backlit LCD?

Do you need always-on wireless data?

Do you need access to your e-books on additional devices?

Final thoughts: Currently, the Nook, Kindle, and iPad are our top e-book reader picks; however, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Depending what features are important to you–color versus black and white screen, backlight versus readability in the sun, touch screen versus not, cheap versus expensive, lightweight versus heavy–the device you prefer may be different from ours. However, there’s no arguing that the range of choices for e-book readers is better now than it ever has been.
