Upcoming electronic textbooks

Today’s New York Times has two articles of interest re the e book buying community. The first is Deborah Solomon’s “Questions” column, with a short Q & A with Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.com. The second, “Devices to Take Textbooks Beyond Text” in the business section highlights an anticipate hybrid device, due out this February, called the eDGe. It features the combination of e-reader screen for text and an LCD screen for illustrations such as animations. It also will allow for stylus-driven note taking, underscoring, math computation and the like. Having personally struggled this quarter with the Landmark Thucydides Peloponnesian War on a Kindle 2 (the maps were unreadable), I look forward to the development of devices more user friendly for academic use–preferably with pagination included.
